Compound Interest

Compound Interest
Charlie Earl

When does 24.2 equal ten? Well…it is 2.42 times larger, so how can the two values be equal? It is the magic of compounding. If you had spent $10 for an item in 1982, and the price of that item compounded at 3% per year until today, that same item would cost you $24.20. The item I’m referring to is actually the relative cost of smaller government as envisioned by members and leaders of the Republican Party. Democrats have consistently sought to break the fiscal bank by initiating and funding worthless programs and policies….let’s say something along the line of a 4% compounded annual increase. Republicans on the other hand….being the self-proclaimed, self-appointed party of smaller government and fiscal responsibility have compromised us into the current morass. It’s true that on a relative scale of “responsibility,” the GOP has proven to be slightly less damaging than the Democrats, but it is an issue of time not dollars. In other words….the Republican strategy has stretched out the time for our fiscal collapse, whereas the Democrat/progressive/socialist mob would have gotten us there more quickly.

Government at all levels is bigger and more costly. Our liberty and rights have been dramatically diminished thus violating the laws of God and men (the Constitution). Both parties have been complicit in this nefarious path. Both parties have been instrumental in our slide into a bankrupt police state. Both parties and their willing stooges have conspired to destroy the American dream for this generation and all future ones. Both parties shall be condemned at the Final Judgment. However…..parties are comprised of people and “parties” will not stand before the Throne of God. People will. Individual persons will. When a party is dead, it has no moment of accountability similar to that of its individual members. Who will answer? Who will pay?

Yes, I admit, that like some of you I was vapidly somnolent while waiting for my guardian elephants to pull our fiscal and freedom chestnuts out of the raging inferno. The massive blaze was large enough, however, that I saw the light. The Democrats’ driving mantra of “the ends justify the means” uses corrupt and immoral means to achieve nefarious and suicidal ends. The “big lie” is the primary tool in the Democrat box of underhanded devices. The GOP, on the other hand, engages in the “little lie” with alarming frequency. Republicans lie to themselves and each other while ignoring the reality of the Party’s march toward oppressive huge government. The party leaders enable the Democrats’ schemes and share the benefits of increased power and influence. Meanwhile….the slower-growth compound interest of deficits, debt and despotism is engulfing all of us.

Despite its lack of a national footprint, the Libertarian Party, too, shares in the sepsis of our national identity. By focusing on tangential issues such as the legalization or decriminalizing of pot, the prospect of gay marriage and other such constitutionally irrelevant issues, the LP has successfully marginalized itself outside the body politic. The aforementioned topics may be personally important to some Americans, but they are insignificant when measured against the overriding dismantling of our constitutional government and the fiscal devastation that currently faces us. The party has been around for more than thirty years, but because of a failure to promote the purity of personal liberty and the sanity of fiscal responsibility, it has become the resting place for every crackpot who has a personal bitch with the government and the other parties. Libertarians, it you wish to be one of the big ones, you must advance the big ideas and allow the people to ascertain how liberty and fiscal responsibility affect them personally. The LP problem is that its appeal has been based on too simple interest.

Compounding is the problem, and our difficulties have been compounded and made more complex because we allowed it, we encouraged it and now we are unable to prevent it. “There ought to be a law” has replaced “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” as our pre-eminent national identity. We screwed up, and I fear that reclaiming our heritage may be the costliest fight in our history. When our Founders declared our independence, the government was an ocean away with other problems on its plate. Today… now…the offending government is in our house. I’m exhausted and fed up with political parties that debate the nonsensical and the marginal. I’m sick of citizens who are distracted by the shiny objects of minor disagreement when there are just two issues: individual liberty and constitutional government. Nothing else matters because if those two principles continue to be abused, we are doomed.

Flawless Floors and Safety Nets

Flawless Floors and Safety Nets
Charlie Earl

For many years our fearless political and bureaucratic leaders have been warning us that if we do not enlarge, enhance or initiate new programs, too many Americans will fall “through the cracks.” The self-appointed social consciences of our nation do not hesitate to insist that each of us through enforced taxation be required to guarantee that no one in the United States will ever go hungry, live without adequate shelter or be denied the use of a cell phone. The metaphorical “safety net” is designed to insure that people in dire need through no fault of their own will not be abandoned by the society and the nation. Here’s a shocker: Nets have holes…sometimes very large ones particularly when administered by bureaucrats and designed by politicians.

As I ponder my obligation as a child of God and a taxpayer in one of the wealthiest nations on Earth, I shudder with anger at the audacity of our political leaders. They coerce our property from us to construct their safety nets by appealing to our sense of compassion then deride our cheapskate attitudes because the net has gaping holes. What they really want is to construct a flawless floor of dependence on government. They seek a floor so tightly designed that no one can slip through the cracks. But you and I know that such a floor cannot exist in the social arena. The flawless floor is an imaginary device for squeezing taxpayers until they too wish to reside on the flawless floor inside the tightly woven fabric of the ultimate safety net. Just like pedophiles use candy to lure children, our political and bureaucratic leaders use compassionate security to seduce the populace.

When people allow the government to assemble the flawless floors of dependence, they are, in essence, implicitly permitting the state to erect walls as well. When one surrenders the property gained through one’s efforts, the state believes it is justification for limiting peoples’ ability and opportunity for accumulating wealth. Hence….the state forges forward constructing the walls that impede and limit the people. Just as with children and pets, if people allow government to expand its reach and portfolio, it will assume that further reach and expansion are acceptable … perhaps even desirable. It is the progression from flimsy nets to sturdier nets to hammocks to floors that leads to enslavement and tyranny.

Historically, our political leaders and their functionaries have been abusing the Constitution of the United States since it was framed. Notably though, the perversion of constitutional principles was accelerated at the beginning of the 20th Century until today when we find ourselves on the cusp of losing our republic. There are very few citizens alive today who were living 100 years ago. Even fewer were old enough to discern or experience the subtle changes in our national direction. It is no wonder, therefore, that so few people currently comprehend the perversion of our national persona. Unless they are historically, philosophically and legally astute, they will not and cannot detect the corrosive elements that have infected our Framers’ vision.

Ignorance may be bliss as the poet, Thomas Grey, penned, but our ignorant bliss eventually yields despotism. So…here we are today, and a vocal minority pleads with their fellow citizens to open their eyes and observe the coming tyranny. The major problem is that our uninformed fellows have been living and adjusting to a soft tyranny for their entire lives, and they cannot see what the problem may be. In fact….they may welcome the onset of true tyranny with open arms because if the safety net is good, the flawless floor is even better. They do not comprehend that as the walls are being built, the floor is decaying.

Fantasy Island

Fantasy Island
Charlie Earl

This is the first installment of a three-part series that runs during “decision week” 2012. Wednesday’s column will be “Great Expectations” and Friday’s post will be “New Beginnings.”

“Ze plane, ze plane” was shouted by Tatoo as he alerted Roarke and the staff about another group of incoming tourists who were about to have their lives challenged and changed. Welcome to Fantasy Island…. The place where your most private dreams may come true or your greatest fears are encountered. As we sit on the cusp of Election Day 2012, each of us may be imagining what our Fantasy Island may look like after the people have spoken (admittedly some will speak [vote] more often than others).

The progressive liberals in our nation are hoping but never praying for the continued dismantling of what was formerly The United States of America. They have invested their emotions and feeble brains in the redistributive union-led model for America. They foresee a glorious future as their all-wise Glorious Leader marches arm-in-arm with other global despots to usher in a new world order. They can taste the new future of a benevolent government guiding and directing the mentally-deficient populace…preventing them from behaviors that could be harmful. The lefties imagine…with gleeful anticipation…a new nation where only the authorities are armed and there is no crime. They dream of a land where disruptive speech is prohibited and “kumbaya” is the word and the mood of the country. They dream such dreams because they inhale the drug of tyranny.

The right-wingers are dreaming, too. They imagine a newly transformed president… a former RINO who will release his inner principles for the “right” reasons. Yes…they know his positions have generally favored big government, but in their heart-of-hearts they believe that he had to mask his true nature because he governed a blue state. They admit that sometimes, maybe even many times, deep-felt principles must be sacrificed on the altar of political expediency. They know in their cores that this new president and his wonkish sidekick will redirect the fiscal insanity of our nation onto a glidepath toward budgetary balance in a mere three decades….if, that is, Congress doesn’t renege or change party control. Also…the little 30-year balancing act could be somewhat problematic if interest rates were to rise and consume a larger portion of the unbalanced budget. But….it’s only a small matter, and OUR GUYS are the good guys. Thirty years with no guarantees are better than nothing, the right wingers proclaim. (a personal note from the author: 30 year promises from any politician are NOT better than nothing: they ARE nothing). But … that’s the hope and the fantasy of those who invest in pipe dreams.

The Tea Party has just landed on the island, and they’re exhausted because they’ve spent so much energy to get there. They are a tad bit more wary than their mainline right-wing conservative cohorts, but they were excited and relived when the Corporate RINO added the Wonder Boy to his ticket. Yes…the same whiz kid with the 30-year plan to bankruptcy. The Tea Party folks are slowly learning (but not fast enough) that career politicians look good, smell good and talk good, but once they get to the Hell named Washington, they begin to smell like sulfur. Despite this new awareness, they still invest their hopes and dreams in long-term officeholders and opportunistic political job-hoppers while crossing their fingers. Their fantasies revolve around the slick-talking politicos’ promise to “honor” the Constitution and to “work” for “smaller” government. While the lingo may be music to their ears, the Tea Party faithful fail to notice the odor of bovine excrement that accompanies the lofty and fiery rhetoric. They hope and pray that if they close their eyes, man the phones, carry the signs, attend the rallies and cheer mightily….it may all work out. Indeed, it’s a fantasy.

The RINO/Establishment GOP has a fantasy also. They still hold power. They have stopped the zealots. They can work with our friends across the aisle. The people will no longer pay attention now that the election is over, and they can go back to “business as usual.”

Which dreams and whose fantasies will come true in the days, weeks and months ahead? We eagerly await the answer.
