March Forth, Patriot

March Forth, Patriot
Charlie Earl

The pilgrim is a wanderer, one who travels to a holy place or shrine. In these unsettled times all of us are pilgrims to one degree or another. Either we are wandering around in a state of disbelief, or we are engaged in a pilgrimage to find the tools to restore our nation to its founding ideals. There are many who scoff when we longingly speak of founding principles. They suggest that the principles were never real, or that our nation has drifted too far from them for any hope of returning. I must admit that our Founding Principles may be idealistic, but without lofty aspirations to challenge us, we will wallow in the lower reaches of our natures.

Dreams, goals and aspirations are vital for human accomplishment. Without them our compasses for achievement will lead us nowhere. We will be lost in a morass of mediocrity struggling to extract some meaning from our mundane lives. Icarus may have crashed, but Daedalus’ imagination provided a pathway to liberty. Most of us lack the time, energy or knowledge to design a structure for governance that encourages individual liberty while defining the parameters of limited collective action. Our learned and passionate Founders and Framers did that for us. Although their recipe for freedom was an imperfect construct, the self-correcting mechanisms in the founding documents gave later generations the means for improving the design or for compensating for oversights.

Unfortunately….because of any number of reasons, our political leaders through the years have not only chosen to ignore the beauty and simplicity of the original plan, they have nonchalantly failed to use the methods developed for changing or correcting our controlling legal document. Is the Constitution of the United States a flawed document? Of course it is. That is why the Framers included a means for correcting it….the amendment process. They understood that some course corrections would be needed, but they set the standard high enough so that an inflamed tyrannical majority could not abuse the minority. The three-quarters state approval would ensure a broad and diverse consensus for any proposed change to the Supreme Law of the Land.

Whether because of impatience or egotism, our political leadership has decided to ignore the wisdom of the amendment process. Consequently, they have consistently passed legislation, rules and regulations that are contrary to the provisions of the Constitution. They have assumed powers that the document does not allow without the amending process. I believe that one could legitimately argue that many of the legislative, executive and judicial actions are extra-legal and therefore can be ignored or brazenly disobeyed. The rule of law is a cherished component of our constitutional republic, but its impact and effect are abrogated when the government uses illicit means for creating laws. Therefore it can be logically and legitimately argued that defiance or resistance of illegal lawmaking is the duty of patriotic citizens.

If public servants fail in their responsibilities to the electorate, then it is an obligation for the citizens to correct the wayward course. Some could validly argue that bi-annual or quadrennial elections are a sufficient remedy for an out-of-control government. Historically that may have been true, but the severity of the problem has been exacerbated to the point that changing a few faces or names is not sufficient. Furthermore…it seems that when careerists move from lower office to higher, they often suffer from several serious maladies including deafness, blindness and severe loss of intellect. It follows, therefore, that when the “public servants” have demonstrated that they are incapable of legally performing their duties, the people must step forward. The people must march forth. Either Samuel Adams or Mahatma Gandhi can be a model for resistance, but resist we must. Patriots must march forth.

Re-defining Happiness

Re-defining Happiness
Charlie Earl

The second paragraph of The Declaration of Independence identifies our unalienable rights as “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.” Since that courageous and glorious time in 1776 when our forbearers dared to challenge the power of Great Britain by declaring their rights to self determination, philosophers, political scientists, sociologists, psychologists and every other “gist” imaginable has attempted to inform us about the “real” purpose of pursuing happiness. Even theologians have weighed into the discussion by suggesting that we follow ethereal pursuits rather than more mundane earthly ones. Over time definitions of certain words tend to drift…to acquire new meanings or greater nuance. Happiness may be, in my view, one of those words.

In today’s environment we often think of happiness as representing either good times and fun or passive contentment. One of my most treasured resources for writing is a reproduction copy of the 1828 Noah Webster American Dictionary of the English Language. Its definitions and descriptions of common words of that era are much closer to the late 18th Century versions than our present day dictionaries might be. The opening or primary definition of “happiness” in the 1828 Webster is:
The agreeable sensations which spring from the
                   enjoyment of good;.
Sadly….many of our current definitions of happiness involves orneriness or debauchery. “Good” rarely is considered a goal or by-product of our pursuits. For many the pursuit of happiness appears to be an effort to escape the consequences of reality. The tawdry nature of our current pursuits has led me to attempt to identify just what our Founders were thinking when they incorporated the “pursuit of happiness” into our founding manifesto.

In my view the Founders wished for each of us to discover our own path for meaning or significance in life. In other words…happiness is fulfillment… doing what we can as best we can do it and reaping the satisfaction (monetary, emotional, and psychic) of knowing we are unhindered in our efforts to reach our full potential. Opportunity, potential and liberty were the driving sentiments behind the Founders’ recognition that God had infused each individual with the ambition for a life of meaning. Admittedly….not everyone would use the spark of desire to light a path of fulfillment. Some would have their sparks extinguished by others, and others would wander through life seeking their personal pathways toward significance. The Founders understood that whatever the outcome for an individual may be, the state or government has no right to choose the pathway, close the trail or regulate the pace of an individual’s journey.

Some people are creators and builders, and some of them become captains of industry after starting with small enterprises that blossom and grow into large ones. Others long to own some land and work the soil to achieve the satisfaction of growing and reaping. Some may prefer to spend many years develop the knowledge and expertise to diagnose and treat the sick. There are those who wish to write, to paint or sculpt and express their innermost selves through art. In many cases people wish to teach or nurture others and experience the joy of watching a student master a concept. A large number merely seek a satisfying job that allows them to care for their loved ones. Each of us seeks meaning or happiness in our own way for our own purposes. Government should not impede our search through laws, regulations, rules or ridicule.

Government should leave us alone so that we may exercise our inherent, unalienable right to morally pursue happiness as we, ourselves, define it. Government programs, subsidies and tax breaks create uneven playing fields and hinder the opportunities for some in order to give advantage to others. Happiness is the search for meaning and intrinsic value in life, and government should never be involved. Now if we can get the in-laws to stay out of the picture, total joy will be attainable.

Too Big to Prevail

Too Big to Prevail?
Charlie Earl

My written ramblings often generate emails that accuse me of being (paraphrasing and consolidating) a hopeless pessimist. Over the years I have learned that one of the better tools for achieving success is to anticipate the “worst case scenario” so that one does not become devastated by a setback. Frankly…I’m a hope-filled reasonably happy individual. We ignore perilous trends and triggers, however, if we choose to permanently reside in Pollyanna-ville. Crap happens. Sometimes we are the cause, and other times we are the collateral damage, but as certain as the sun will rise tomorrow, is the fact that our best-laid plans will often go awry. Let me provide a current example: Barrack H. Obama is a terrible President of the United States. He is lazy and incompetent. His ideology is anti-human and anti-liberty. Many of us would agree that his reelection would be destructive for the future of our nation. However….. a BIG however, the election of Mitt Romney, Jill Stein or Gary Johnson will not stop our slide into tyranny. If any of these three are selected by the voters, our task will not be over. No, a new series of challenges will face us as a new ideology, a different approach or alternate priorities are the driving forces in government. New challenges will replace the old ones.

When we are aware of the flaws in our plans, we are more able to alter them or compensate for them. Merely recognizing the imperfections, though, does not correct them. The plan must be restructured to address the new reality if our eventual goal(s) is to be achieved. In addition although people are needed to implement a plan of action, we must resist the temptation to invest our adoration and total confidence in certain individuals. Hero worship will not secure our liberty. The Lone Ranger is fictional, and William Wallace (Braveheart) is long dead. The plan for national restoration should not hinge on personalities or political promises, but should be firmly anchored to the principle of individual liberty. If we look to changes in government for our goals, we are condemned to disappointment. Our focus….our fervor…..our fight must be directed toward achieving the maximum of personal sovereignty for every person in the land. End of mini-sermon for today.

As many of you are receiving this, I’ll be on the road toward Lima as our bbq business has a large catering event at the PepsiCo Bottling Plant there. This is our second year, and it will be great to see some of the folks again. I should return home in time to grab a few hours sleep before watching my beloved Buckeyes travel to East Lansing and take on Sparty. This game will be a true test for the young pups on the OSU roster. Go Bucks!!

Although I believe that our President is an idiot, I suspect that a large number of our fellow citizens are just as clueless as he. Case in point: The Libyan fiasco--  He continues to advance the meme that a low-grade You Tube video is the spark for unrest in the Mideast and the driving impetus for the deaths of four Americans. First, Muslim unrest and anger towards the U.S.A. and our citizens is NOT a new development. Second, even the president of Libya states that the attacks there were preplanned and coordinated. So why doesn’t Obama understand the real picture? And why aren’t the citizens of the country demanding that he face reality and accept responsibility?

Finally….remember that it takes more than a course correction to reach your destination. You also need enough fuel or energy to complete the journey.

Have a blessed weekend.
